Kindle 2 Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find some frequently asked questions about the Kindle 2 from Amazon.com. This will help to answer a number of questions that people have about the Kindle 2.

I ordered Kindle 1 before the Kindle 2 release, but have not received it yet—which Kindle will I get?

Because you already ordered the original Kindle and are awaiting its arrival, we're pleased to inform you that we are upgrading your order so that you will receive the new Kindle 2. You will be in the first group to receive Kindle 2, and you will receive yours as soon as Kindle 2 becomes available later this month. You need not do anything.

Should you wish to view, cancel or change your order you may do so any time prior to shipment. Post shipment, you can always return Kindle in it's original packaging with all accessories within the first 30 days of getting it.

How's Kindle 2 different from the original Kindle?

Kindle 2 has all of the great features Kindle users enjoy everyday. We kept everything readers love about the original Kindle—the convenience of reading what you want, when you want it, the immediacy of getting books wirelessly delivered in less than 60 seconds, and Kindle's ability to "disappear" in your hands so you can get lost in the author's words.

We added a few improvements we think you'll like:

  • Improved navigation: Kindle has a new easy-to-use 5-way controller, enabling precise on-screen navigation for selecting text to highlight or looking up words.

  • Sleeker design: Just over 1/3 of an inch, Kindle is as thin as most magazines. At 10.2 ounces, Kindle is lighter than a typical paperback.

  • Improved Display: Reads like real paper; now boasts 16 shades of gray for clear text and even crisper images.

  • More memory: Kindle 2 comes with 1.4 Gigabytes of available internal memory so you can carry over 1,500 titles and no longer need an SD memory slot for additional storage.

  • Longer battery life: With Kindle's 25% longer battery life, you can read on a single charge for up to 4 days with wireless on. Turn wireless off and read for up to 2 weeks. Battery life will vary based on wireless usage, such as shopping the Kindle Store and downloading content.

  • Integrated power and USB: You can now use a single cord to charge your Kindle from a power outlet or connect it to a USB port for charging and file transfer.

  • Read-to-Me: With new Text-to-Speech feature, Kindle can read every book, blog, magazine, and newspaper out loud to you.

We encourage you to look at the full product specs and demonstrations on the Kindle 2 product detail page.

I have a Kindle—how do I transfer my books and subscriptions to my new Kindle 2?

We store all your purchases from the Kindle Store on Amazon.com, so you can access your books and other content from multiple Kindles, including Kindle 2, as long as the Kindles are registered to the same account.

For your convenience, we store your annotations as well as the last page read in each book so you can pick up reading where you left off. We make it easy to transfer books and subscriptions from one Kindle to another.

Here are your options.

To schedule delivery of books from your computer to your Kindle 2:

  1. Visit the Manage Your Kindle page.
  2. Scroll down to the "Your orders and individual charges" section.
  3. Select the Kindle 2 listed in the "Download/Send to" drop-down choices.

You can schedule delivery of your existing books before your Kindle 2 even arrives. Your books will be automatically downloaded to your Kindle when you turn on the device, provided that you are in wireless range.

To wirelessly download books directly from your Kindle 2:

  1. Select "Archived Items" from the Home screen or "View Archived Items" from the menu.
  2. Select the item from the Archived Items screen.

To transfer a periodical subscription from one Kindle to another:

Subscription content can only be delivered to one Kindle registered to your Amazon.com account. When you update your delivery settings, the next available issue and all following issues on your subscription will be delivered to the designated Kindle.

  1. Visit the Manage Your Kindle page.
  2. Scroll down to the section titled "Your Active Kindle subscriptions."

Under "Deliver future editions," select the Kindle to which you'd like the subscription to be transferred and select "Save."

Will you continue to support the original Kindle?

We're excited to offer the next generation of Kindle and thank all Kindle owners for making Kindle a success. We'll honor your commitment by continuing to provide the quality product availability and support you expect for your Kindle.

What can I read on Kindle 2?

The Kindle Store currently has more than 230,000 book titles; top U.S. and international newspapers; an expanding selection of magazines, all with a free 14-day trial; and more than 1,200 blogs for every interest. Visit the Kindle store to see our selection!

If you've ordered a Kindle 2, you can start building your library before your Kindle arrives. Order books from the Kindle store and they will be waiting for you to read when you first turn on your device.

You can also choose from thousands of audiobooks from Audible.com and read your personal documents on Kindle.

Can I give Kindle 2 and Kindle content as a gift?

We make it easy to send Kindle as a gift:

  1. Place Kindle in your Shopping Cart.
  2. Click the Cart icon at the top of our web site when you are ready to complete your purchase.
  3. In the Cart, check the box next to "Add gift-wrap/note."
  4. Click the Proceed to Checkout button and follow instructions to complete the purchase.

Designating your Kindle purchase as a gift ensures that the device is not automatically registered to your Amazon.com account and prices for the Kindle purchase will not appear on the packing slip.

When the gift recipient opens Kindle and turns it on for the first time, he or she will need to register Kindle to an active Amazon.com account by selecting Settings from the Home Menu on Kindle 2.

If you'd like to give books to Kindle owners, you may want to give an Amazon.com Gift Card. Your gift recipient will be able to apply the Gift Card balance to his/her Amazon.com account and make purchases from the Kindle Store.

Has the wireless service changed for Kindle 2?

Kindle 2 has the same Whispernet wireless connection that utilizes Amazon's optimized technology plus Sprint's national high-speed (EVDO) data network to enable you to wirelessly search, discover, download and read content on the go.

For Kindle 2, we expanded Kindle's national coverage to include more cities and areas in all 50 states, enabling wireless downloads of books, newspapers, magazines, and blogs. Check our Kindle Coverage Tool for availability.

With Whispernet, you can be anywhere in Sprint's high-speed data network coverage area, think of a book, and get it in one minute. Similarly, newspaper subscriptions are delivered wirelessly each morning and most magazines arrive before they hit newsstands.

Can I use Kindle 2 outside the wireless service area?

Yes, Kindle 2 was designed with the traveler in mind.

If you have a computer with an internet connection and a USB port, you can buy and download content from anywhere in the world. You can make purchases from the Kindle 2 store on Amazon.com, download items to your computer, and transfer the files to your Kindle using the USB connection.

You can access all your purchases from the Kindle Store via the Manage Your Kindle page and have personal documents converted to a Kindle-compatible format and sent to the e-mail address on your Amazon.com account.

At this time, we are unable to offer the Amazon Kindle and associated digital content from the Kindle Store to our international customers due to our copy holder agreements. Please see "Is Kindle 2 available to customers outside the United States?" below for more information.

Visit our Kindle Coverage Tool to see the Whispernet service area.

Can I manage my Kindle 2 and library on Amazon.com?

The Manage Your Kindle page works the same for Kindle 2 as it does for the original Kindle. This versatile online tool lets you view and manage your Kindle content, personal settings and account information.

Here are some of the tasks you can manage online at Amazon.com:

  • Register/Deregister your Kindle: Register Kindle to your Amazon.com account information or deregister Kindle from your account if you transfer ownership or no longer have access your Kindle.

  • Send Archived items to Kindle or your computer: Items purchased from the Kindle Store also appear on the Manage Your Kindle page. From there, you can send items wirelessly to your Kindle or download them to your computer for USB transfer.

  • Personalize your Kindle: Give your Kindle a new name or e-mail address for receiving personal documents.

  • Manage approved e-mail addresses: Maintain a list of e-mail addresses authorized to send e-mail attachments to Kindle.

  • Open orders: View details of orders pending payment and delivery.

  • Your orders and individual charges: View your recent purchase history, billing details, and download or queue items for delivery to your Kindle.

  • Delivery status: View orders and subscriptions to see pending content and content recently delivered wirelessly to your Kindle.

Why are some features, such as Text To Speech, labeled "experimental"?

The experimental category represents features we are still working on to enhance the Kindle experience even further. Try them out and let us know what you think. We have no plans to remove the experimental features—in fact, we are working hard to make them even better for you.

Is Kindle 2 available to customers outside the United States?

At this time, we are unable to offer the Amazon Kindle 2 and associated digital content from the Kindle Store to our international customers due to import/export laws and other restrictions. When you place your order for an Amazon Kindle, the shipping address for the delivery must be recognized by our systems as valid U.S. addresses.

To successfully purchase digital content from the Amazon Kindle Store, the 1-Click payment method listed on the Manage Your Kindle page must be a credit or debit card issued by a U.S. Bank with a U.S. billing address. We value our international customers and hope to make Kindle available internationally in the future.

Authors Guild v. Kindle - Upcoming Legal Battle?

The new Kindle 2 from Amazon has a new feature that could end up the topic of a very intriguing court battle between Amazon on the Authors Guild. The potential dispute is centered around the new text-to-speech feature in the Kindle 2. Text-to-speech will allow owners of the Kindle 2 to have the e-books they purchase and download read to them by the Kindle device. There is no audio file of the book. Instead, Kindle uses a program that has a computerized voice "read" the text and convert it into sound.

The Authors Guild has made statements suggesting that Amazon's use of the text-to-speech feature is a violation of copyright law. This copyright law protects audio books by not allowing audio copies of books to be provided along with a written version of the book at no charge. So it would be illegal for a book seller to make an audio recording of a book and include it with the written version. The copyright law also works in reverse, protecting the written copy of a book from an audio copy. So in essence, a written version of a book does not give the purchaser rights to an audio version of the book.

In a statement by the Authors Guild, they bring up the fact that audio books made up over $1 billion in sales in 2007 alone. They believe that text-to-speech in the Kindle 2 "presents a significant challenge to the publishing industry". They take a bit of a jab at the text-to-speech quality by calling is "serviceable", but then acknowledge that they expect the technology "to improve rapidly". So they see the text-to-speech feature in the Kindle 2 to be a threat to their audio book industry. While they have not taken any legal actions, they are looking into the possibility and are advising authors and publishers to protect their rights against the text-to-speech feature.

On the surface, it would seem fairly straight forward that Amazon is in violation of this copyright law, right? Not so fast. Amazon states, and many legal observers agree, that text-to-speech does not violate this copyright law due to the fact that text-to-speech is not the same as a pre-recorded audio book. There is no audio file in the Kindle 2. There is no pre-recording. It is simply a program that assists in the reading of text by converting it live into voice.

In fact, text-to-speech programs have been around for a long time. There are many companies who offer text-to-speech programs with the largest being Nuance Communications. Nuance provides text-to-speech to a number of industries including GPS units, cell phones, vehicle voice control systems and more. Nuance is also the company who has provided Amazon with the license on their text-to-speech program in the Kindle 2. Text-to-speech is becoming more common in electronic devices, but has been used for years to assist the visually impaired.

So who is in the right on this issue? It is difficult, maybe impossible, to say at this point. It will likely have to go to court, as it is such a gray legal area where no prior legal decisions have been made. Without any precedent, a judge will have to make a decision that could have major impacts on audio books and the future of text-to-speech technology. This should make for an interesting legal battle in the upcoming months and years.
